The 2011 edition of the MHIMA Legal Resource Manual For Health Information Management in Minnesota is now available.
This resource manual continues to serve as the comprehensive resource for Health Information professionals. It includes the laws and rules that address the majority of issues that may arise with respect to health information practice. It is a compilation of best practices and experience of health information professionals and the facilities they represent in Minnesota. All health information departments should have this Manual.

MDH 2011 Maximum Charges for Copies of Patient Records The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) recently revised and updated their Issue Brief regarding "Maximum Charges for Copies of Patient Records" for 2011. This September 2011 version supersedes all previous versions. To download an updated copy of the Minnesota Department of Health's 2011 Maximum Charges for Patient Records, click here
For 2011, when section 144.292 applies, the maximum charge is $1.23 per page for copy charges and $16.24 for retrieval fees. Copies of the Issue Brief may also be obtained from the MDH Website.

e-Prescribing Guidance
In July 2010, MDH published an update of the e-Prescribing Guidance document to answer questions as pharmacies and providers prepare to comply with this mandate. The updated guidance document is available by clicking here.

WI Changes to Medical Record Access & Fees
For those of you involved with health care facilities in Wisconsin, be aware that effective June 30, 2009 the passage of Act 28 removes the authority of the Department of Health Services to establish maximum fees for copies of health care records. These fees are now set in statute. This Act also modified language regarding patient access to health care records. Click here for information from the WI Health Information Management Association.
